The Wellbriety Indian Center of Colorado Springs

In the fall of 2007, a number of American Indians in the Pikes Peak Region contacted White Bison about their interest in establishing an Indian Center in this community.

After a series of meetings with several Elders, regarding the feasibility of an Indian Center, focus groups with various American Indian people took place.

A coalition was established in January of 2008.  It’s purpose was to focus on a consciousness of wellness and creating a sense of community for American Indians in the Pikes Peak Region.

The focus of the Wellbriety Indian Center would be on wellness. Wellbriety means sobriety plus a life way that is healthy and balanced emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually.

A grant writer was hired and a number of grants were submitted to federal agencies and Colorado Foundations.

Interested members of the American Indian community have been meeting at three different meetings each month since early spring.  A monthly community potluck takes place in different places around the community to help to develop relationships and invite new people to participate.

A steering committee was established to help direct the focus on the organization’s development.

A cultural committee was also established to implement local cultural activities.  The first activity that they have identified will be the CSAT Recovery Month Wellbriety Powwow to be held at the Hillside Community Center on September 27.
